Palazzine Bazzani-Benini The two buildings stand as the new city gate and the scenographic background to the War Memorial. Constructed on the site of the nineteenth-century Vittorio Emanuele customs barrier, apparently similar, the two buildings contain differences in the internal parts and in the functional distribution. They show the rejection of a monumental language, encouraged by the approach of the designer Bazzani to inspirations of a twentieth-century taste. Cesare Bazzani, however, did not abandon the marble vision of the entire building and looked for a uniformity of materials: due to economic difficulties, the facades were made with stucco, in imitation of travertine, the only material that could resemble stone. The two belvedere towers are the only ones that have a specific reference to the classical order: they are set back from the street front to allow two corner terraces, which were functional for watching the great parades.
