Mosaics of Flight

Mosaics of Flight

102 metres of mosaics dedicated to the history of flight: this is the story that unfolds along the walls of the four-sided portico of the former Aeronautical College.
Since time immemorial, mankind has looked upwards, driven by an innate impulse to explore, learn, discover, push boundaries, go further, imagine and shape the future.
Brave, enlightened and visionary men, together with scientific discoveries and technological innovations, have turned one of humanity’s greatest dreams into reality: the conquest of the skies.
The mosaics of Flight recount this endless human adventure.
The mosaics of Flight recount the endless human adventure of flight.

From mythological wax wings and Leonardo da Vinci's flying machines to early parachutes, flying ships and hydrogen balloons, and then on to steam-powered helicopters, gliders, pioneering aeroplanes, airships and seaplanes, the mosaics depict the evolution of flight.

They also portray Italian aircraft that played a leading role in extraordinary adventures in the skies and numerous international records between the two world wars, with the flying ace Francesco Baracca standing out above all.

Finally, the mosaics depict fighter aircraft from colonial Italy in the early 20th century, the irredentist era and the Mussolini era.

A long aerial journey from the dawn of civilisation to the first half of the 20th century, told through black and white tiles.

A unique work within the realm of the visual arts.
